Learning / Dysgu

Learning is a key priority in the local area:

• In East Cardiff 42% of the population have no qualifications and 26% in North Cardiff.

• A high percentage of children receive free school meals – a means tested indication of poverty.

• Parental input is low and schools have difficulties in engaging with parents over absence rates.

• In a number of consultations, community members have reported barriers to engaging with schools and difficulty in accessing school facilities for community use.

• Areas within the cluster where absence rates are improving have seen a more community focussed attitude taken by the schools in recent years.

• There have been significant changes to local high schools, with St. Teilos moving site and Rumney and Llanrumney High Schools combining to form Eastern High in September 2013 and Llanedeyrn High in the process of closing by July 2014.

• Attitudes of children and families are low and there is a lack of trust due to cynicism around the development plans.

• Cost of higher education was cited by local adults as a barrier to study.

• There are a variety of activities available in school holidays but there have previously been few links with schools or the curriculum and little focus on encouraging learning.

Through a variety of projects we aim to tackle many of these issues to help improve the overall standard of learning opportunities in the area.

Mae dysgu yn flaenoriaeth allweddol yn yr ardal leol:

• Yn Nwyrain Caerdydd 42% o’r boblogaeth unrhyw gymwysterau a 26% yng Ngogledd Caerdydd.

• Mae canran uchel o blant yn derbyn prydau ysgol am ddim – yn golygu arwydd prawf o dlodi.

• mewnbwn rhieni yn isel ac ysgolion yn cael anawsterau o ran ymgysylltu â rhieni oherwydd y cyfraddau absenoldeb.

• Mewn nifer o ymgynghoriadau, aelodau o’r gymuned wedi adrodd rhwystrau i ymgysylltu ag ysgolion ac anhawster cael mynediad at gyfleusterau ysgol at ddefnydd y gymuned.

• Mae meysydd o fewn y clwstwr lle mae cyfraddau absenoldeb yn cael eu gwella wedi gweld agwedd mwy ar y gymuned sy’n canolbwyntio a gymerwyd gan yr ysgolion yn y blynyddoedd diwethaf.

• Bu newidiadau sylweddol i ysgolion uwchradd lleol, gyda St Teilo yn symud safle ac Ysgolion Uwchradd Tredelerch a Llanrhymni cyfuno i ffurfio Uwchradd y Dwyrain ym mis Medi 2013, ac Ysgol Uwchradd Llanedern yn y broses o gau erbyn Gorffennaf 2014.

• Agweddau o blant a theuluoedd yn isel ac mae diffyg ymddiriedaeth o ganlyniad i sinigiaeth ynghylch y cynlluniau datblygu.

• Cost addysg uwch ei grybwyll gan oedolion lleol fel rhwystr i astudio.

• Mae amrywiaeth o weithgareddau ar gael yn ystod gwyliau’r ysgol, ond mae ychydig o gysylltiadau ag ysgolion neu’r cwricwlwm ac ychydig o ffocws ar annog dysgu wedi bod yn y gorffennol.
